First Manicure - What Should I Expect

Most women when considering to have their first manicure done will often do so when planning to attend a wedding, anniversary dinner, class reunion or similar event. However, you shouldn't have to organise a special day to have a manicure done to experience the feeling of being spoilt and pampered just to show up looking your best for someone else. I should think not, every woman should take the time out to treat themself for their own personal benefit and self-appreciation. So why not treat yourself to a manicure they are fun and relaxing!

If you've never had a manicure done before and maybe considering taking that first step to having yourself pampered get ready as I am about to share with you just some of the many reasons why so many women today can be seen spending their time and precious money at their local nail salons and spa.

The first thing you'll need to do is check with a friend, family member or co-worker who is in the habit of routinely having their manicure done at a salon to have them recommend a suitable salon for your first experience.

On your first visit, if you've previously had your nails done by a friend or even by yourself, the first thing your manicurist will do is have that nail polish removed followed by the filing and shaping your nails. If you were to look closely you will notice how the nail technician shapes your nails by either filing them square-tipped or rounded depending on the natural shape and texture of your nails. (This is primarily done due to the fact that some nails will tend to break much easier if they are incorrectly filed). In fact, by filing using the natural shape of your nail ensures that you will develop stronger nails. Nonetheless, you can relax and trust in the wisdom your nail technician that you are being properly taken care of. After the nail technician has finished filing and shaping your nails she/he will apply a cuticle cream to your cuticles subsequently using a cuticle pusher to gently push your cuticles down.

As a part of the manicure service, most salons will include a hand massage by the nail technician. In truth, almost every woman will confess that this massage, often referred to as a "little piece of heaven" is one of the main reasons why they will continually find themselves at the salon almost every week. On your first manicure, you can expect your hand massage to most likely include a variety of reflexology techniques involving the physical action of applying pressure to the hands with a specific finger, thumb and hand techniques to completely relax your hands.

Now the Nail Polish

Choosing the right nail polish for your first manicure will undoubtedly be your biggest challenge, I know for me, I was totally dumbfounded when confronted with the wide variety of colour selection when I went on my first manicure. Nonetheless, if you're unable to make up your mind as to which colour is best for you, you can ask the advice of your nail technician, but bear in mind there is no guarantee that you'll both share the same taste in colour, so if you haven't got a specific colour in mind you might want to go along with a French Manicure. The French Manicure is designed to give a natural look, with a modest line of colour just at the tip of the nail which can start with the colour white ranging to a light pink at which your nail technician will apply a polished clear coat over your nails to give them a lustrous and brilliant look. Your nail technician may suggest you include an additional design to your nails such as a cute little flower or something similar, my suggestion; try it, you'll be amazed at how it enhances the beauty of your new manicure.

If you have chosen a gel or Shellac polish then you will be set to go. However, if you have had regular nail varnish applied you should be extremely careful with your nails for at least the next 2 1/2 hours after your appointment. Believe me, you don't want to end up chipping your new manicure an hour later only to return to the salon for a fix.
